More Scams

03/27/2025

There are so many scams out there.  You must verify anytime some one is asking you to give them money or personal or financial information.  We are receiving reports that Logan County citizens are receiving a call from someone claiming to be Lt. Smith from the Logan County Sheriff's Office and the caller ID for the number states "Sheriff's Office".  This person claiming to be Lt. Smith (we don't have a Lt. Smith working here) told the residents that they missed jury duty and they must pay money online.  THIS IS A SCAM!  We do not call you and ask for money to paid over the phone or through some website or at a kiosk for missing jury duty.

The only online payments we take are for circuit and district court fines, fees, and restitution and that online payment system is listed on our website at loganso.com.  If someone calls you or sends you a text message or email and claim they are from the Sheriff's Office, police, a bank, a toll road agency, a government agency, Social Security, etc. then you must always verify before you give any financial or personal information or money.

REMEMBER, these scam artists can easily spoof numbers so the phone number that shows up on your caller ID maybe from the Logan County Sheriff's Office or some other organization that the scammers are claiming to be from.  There are phone apps that can mask a person's number and change it so it shows a different number on the phone they are calling.  We have worked harassing communication cases where people have received calls from a number that is a family or friend's number and it turned out to be from an ex-spouse or an ex-partner who is calling to harass.  Email addresses and websites are spoofed as well to look authentic.

These scammers are sophisticated and mostly come from out-of-state or out-of-country.  Since so much our personal information is available online, the scammers may even know some personal information about you to use to make you feel at ease.  Question everything when people call asking for money.  Whether someone calls stating you have a relative in jail or involved in accident or is in a hospital and they have some personal information about that relative, that does not man it is true.  And those toll road messages - I get those all of the time.  You must always independently verify.
